Study TitleANU Poll 2014: Changing Views of Governance
Series NameANUPoll
Primary InvestigatorMcAllister, Ian
ADA IDau.edu.anu.ada.ddi.01284
AbstractThe ANU Polls is series of polls conducted three times a year by The Australian National University. The purpose of the series is to assess Australians' opinions on important and topical issues, with an emphasis on international comparisons. This poll, conducted in June-July 2014, is the seventeenth in the series. The poll focuses on thoughts about the future of Australia, in comparison to other advanced democracies, revisiting issues covered in the first ANU Poll conducted in 2008, which focussed on the 2020 Summit. Variables include opinions about the way Australia is heading; the biggest problems facing Australia today; level of confidence in various organisations such as defence forces, public service, police and the courts; satisfaction with democracy; federalism, and future prospects for Australia. Background variables include voting intentions, gender, household composition, country of birth, age, religion, highest level of education, employment status, occupation and income. In addition, the poll included a series of questions on use of telephone and internet services in the household. Data from 2008 ANU Poll are included in the dataset.

Response RateThe participation rate was defined as completed interviews as a proportion of sample members who could be contacted within the call cycle and were not identified as out of scope. The final overall participation rate was 62.8%. The participation rate varied quite significantly between the sample frames, for the landline frame it was 54.9% and for the mobile frame it was 86.3%. In addition to the response rate provided above, the AAPOR Response Rate 3 is also included. The RR3 relies on estimating the proportion of cases of unknown eligibility that may have been eligible for the survey and including this estimate in the denominator for the calculation of the survey response rate. The AAPOR RR3 overall response rate for the survey was 30.0%.

Title (documentation)ANU Poll 2014: Changing Views of Governance
WeightingDue to the oversampling of 188 landline respondents in the ACT, two weights were prepared; one to be used for national analysis and the other to be used for analysis at a state level. The weighting approach employed for the national weight involved a two-stage process. The first stage consisted of applying a design weight to adjust for an individual’s chance of selection based on three possible factors including the number of in-scope sample members in a household, the number of landlines in the household used for private calls; and/or having a mobile phone. The second step was to apply a post stratification weight to ensure the final sample was weighted to relevant population benchmarks for age, gender and location and telephony status. Demographic benchmarks used for weighting were obtained from Estimated Residential Population figures (2013) provided by the ABS. These adjust for census under-counting and people overseas at the time of the survey. Telephony status benchmarks were obtained from publically available reports authored by the Australian Communication and Media Authority (2013). The state weight was an adjustment of the national weight. Separate means of the national weight were obtained for ACT cases and cases from elsewhere in Australia. Each weight was then divided by the appropriate mean to create the state weight. This meant that the mean weight of the ACT cases was one and that the mean weight for cases in other parts of Australia was one. This will mean that the weighted frequency will be more indicative of the actual frequency when reporting figures for the ACT. For further informations see Technical Report.
